One Year of Verbotomy…

Well it was a year ago today that I registered verbotomy.com. I was attending the Cross Platform Mentorship Lab at the Banff New Media Centre in Banff, Alberta, Canada. It was a special program designed to help artists design, develop and produce multimedia art projects. I was getting a lot of positive feedback on the project, but Ravi Shukla the legal advisor, told me I had to come up with new name for my project. I immediately put on my thinking cap and came up with the name “Verbotomy”. It was available as a domain name, and when I searched the word “Verbotomy”, Google produced one, and only one result! It was a reference in the Oxford Dictionary to book published in England in the seventeenth century on the Taxonomy of Language. Perfect! Today Verbotomy produces over 100,000 Google results…

Anyways I haven’t finished today’s comic, so I have to get back to work. If you’d like to leave a comment or ask me question, just post it here.

Be creative!

James

P.S. Just posted the definition and comic so I thought I’d add it to this post.

DEFINITION: v. intr. To silently signal the position of a piece of food on a person’s face using hand gestures, facial expressions and tonguing motions. n. A nonverbal communication system used to alert and assist diners with food on their faces.

Why do you keep making those stupid faces?

  1. James, glad to hear I have inspired everyone!
I’m sure I’ll be putting today’s definition to practice today!

  2. I’m not sure the burfeaucracy at work would appreciate it – that must be one of the perks when you have your own office

  3. Hi Mother Earth! Thanks for dropping by… Verbotomy is James Gang’s brainchild. Immaculate conception thing or whatever….

  4. Today’s verbotomy wound be an immaculate confection. I’ve been sticking my finger in the icing for hours now, keeps coming out clean.

  5. Well as usual I’m completely late to the party but from a relatively faithful Verbotomist, happy Verbday!

  6. Happy birthday! I’m delighted to discover Verbotomy (especially on such an auspicious day) and I’ll look forward to spending many hours here in the future!

  7. hey James – at least make it rhyme. I was going to suggest lumber but it’s too rude so how about

I stuck in a tumbler and pulled out a plumber and said……

  8. Hey James – Is there any way you can put the comments in order so they make more sense. The responses seem to jump because they’re put in according to a timeline.

  9. And now, a poem in honor of James…

There once was a fellow named James
Who really loved his word games
    Verbotomy he created,
But the whole thing got jaded
When Jabber signed up, what a shames!

Sorry – I had very little time to compose it.
    (still looking for the keg.)

  10. Maybe… But I am imagining it’s kind of fun to read the comments as they appear. It’s slightly disjointed, and the reader have to see the patterns, and figure out how it all fits together. So it’s a creative puzzle! And for Verbotomists, that’s the name of the game.

  11. Well, nobody told me THAT! Please step away from the cake, I’m armed and, er, legged.

  12. Will no one come to jabberwocky’s aid
A precious gem is also a jade
So once purple has had her swill
We’ll sing her a little song to keep her still

  13. Your words are like diamonds, Jabberwocky. And I think that once Purple has had her fill, she will be definitely need to be stilled, if not pickled.

  14. thanks James – I think purple may be pickled already – by the way purple what is an arichoke?

  15. it’s ‘Over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house we go”………..

  16. James — I love your cartoon today. It so funny — I keep on sticking out my tongue to mimic the lady….

    Well done!

    Franke

  17. I’ve only recently become addicted to Verbotomy but am finding Verboholism to be a delightful and entertaining addiction. Happy Birthday James, and many more.

  18. Mustang – as Jabberwocky so eloquently put it, soon you will need a Verbotomy lobotomy.

  19. Hey Mr. James Gang! You’ve done a great job with this game! It is so much fun and I play it almost every morning. Kudos for you – Verbotomy is an excellent game. I’m also curious though with this game – wasn’t there a period that you had about 100 words every day? It was like 2 or 3 months after you inaugurated that all these newbies (just like a wave of immigration)came and made words. Wow! That was pretty big I remember. It must have been pretty hard to win though with 100 competitors every day… But on that note, it was a good accomplishment on your part in bringing together many new verbotomists. Congrats James for making my life a verbotovie! – and thanks so much for your creativity.

(P.S. This is a pretty darn big birthday bash! It must have been a tiring day to answer all those verbotoblogs!)

  20. Hey Mustang! Thanks for dropping by the Verbotomy Blog. You have certainly been very creative and invented some wonderful words in your first week! Congratulations and welcome to Verbotomy.

  21. If anyone has the skill and steady hand needed to perform a Verbotomy Lobotomy, it’s purpleartichokes. Mustang, you are in good hands. Of course, you may want wait until tomorrow before she operates, because since she found the keg inside the cake, she’s been even more loopier than usual.

  22. Hey Kevcom, Thank you for the Kudos! Yes we had a big surge of visitors last December after of an excellent review about Verbotomy from JayIsGames.com. (See: http://jayisgames.com/archives/2006/12/verbotomy.php) Since then we have worked at building a steady base of players and increasing the number of visitors. In fact there many more visitors than they are players, because people love reading the invented words created by our Verbotomists.

And on that note, I would like to thank you for your wonderful words, especially for winning to Verboticism of the day with “Privypal”. See: http://www.verbotomy.com/blog/?p=201

It is great to see such excellent creativity!

  23. ZZZZZZZ…. *snort*… Honestly, I’m jush fine! Weally! Come here Mustang, lets take a look at that fwontal lobe… Well now, how am I supposed to operate when you keep spinning like that! Uh… guess I’ll just wipe the icing off these scrubs and head home. Thanks James, it’s been a great year and tons o’ fun! Sorry ’bout the table dance. May Verbotomy (and you) have many more happy burfdays to come!
