Doctorow Verbotomy: Future Language Present Tense

During the week of May 7-13 2007, we will be offering a prize to the most creative player of week. Science Fiction Author, and Information Rights Activist, Cory Doctorow (see his blog at www.craphound.com), is giving us an autographed copy of the print edition of his latest book “Overclocked: Stories of the Future Present”. Publishers Weekly describes Cory and Overclocked with these words:

An unabashed promulgator of the Internet and its democratic potential, Doctorow explores the benefits and consequences of online systems in this provocative collection of six mostly long stories… Most “meat”-minded readers will find much to savor.

Overclocked by Cory DoctorowDoctorow Overclocked
Two of my favorite stories in Overclocked are “When Sysadmins Ruled the Earth” and “Anda’s Game“. I kind of work as a Sysadmin, at least for Verbotomy anyways, so it’s funny to see a SysAdmin from Cory’s perspective. And Anda’s Game is a really cool, and totally topical retake (i.e. set in the present) on Orson Scott Card’s great novel “Ender’s Game“.

Anyways, what’s really great about Cory, is that he takes the important social issues of our day, like copyright (in Printcrime) and the exploitation of third world labor systems (in Anda’s Game), and uses a Science Fiction perspective to jack-up the tension create a story that resonates with relevancy.
