Pronunciation: smuh thur in law

Sentence: Shelly's mother taught her, from the time she was born, that she could not succeed at anything, without her mother's help. Even after Shelly married, Shelly was convinced she could not care for her children properly, without her mother's help, so she invited her mother to live with her and her husband. Her husband acquisced, often admitting "If mommy ain't happy, nobody ain't happy." It was his way of coping with his wife and smother-in-law.

Etymology: Smother, Mother-in-law. Smother - stifle another with to much attention and interference. Mother-in-law - the mother of your spouse.
