Pronunciation: mom ee snee rest

Sentence: Although Joan had never approved of Smedley (he wasn't good, tall, rich or dynamic enough for her precious daughter, Claudia), she none the less lived in their home and ran the show, while contributing neither funds nor moral support to her son-in-law. Joan commented on everything and approved of nothing that went on in the home. Although Smedley had sired 2 perfect children with Claudia, the delight of their Grandma's eye, she still held him in contempt. He could do nothing to please her and his wife Claudia never stood up to her Mother to show solidarity with her husband. When Smedley's book was published and became a #1 Best Seller, she was agog at his success. His book was entitled, "Mommysneerest", a novel about a man named Smedley, who's mother-in-law, Joan, tried to come between he and his wife Claudia. Apparently, his story struck a chord with others and he was invited on "Oprah" to discuss his book. With his money from the book sales and his offer of it being made into a movie, Stanley was able to afford to buy his mother-in-law a home of her own, very far away from him and his family. The dreaded in-law was now an outlaw in his home. The irony was that he would never have experienced such success without the scorn of his mother-in-law!

Etymology: Mommy Dearest (Book by actress Joan Crawford's daughter Christine about her mother's abusive behaviour to her) Sneer (a facial expression of contempt or scorn; the upper lip curls;a contemptuous or scornful remark)
